stupidity

I was thinking of some *ahem* intellectual stuffs nowadays.

So, I was thinking on "what exactly is stupid?"

Of course by definition, stupid is:

1.lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull.
2.characterized by or proceeding from mental dullness; foolish; senseless: a stupid question.

courtesy of www.dictionary.com a very good website (one of my short cut links!)

Anyway, I thought of the inability to learn what normal people can do, and the said person cannot, thus stupid.

Example, I have this malay colleague who is very slow in learning stuffs, thus auntie Sally always scold her, and she cried in the shop's toilet. Sally called her 'stupid' and made her sad.

What if, she is actually capable of learning things as fast as normal people but her interest is not there thus she did not put in enough effort to learn? in fact, she might be super good in other areas, such as cooking? therefore she is not stupid

such as me, not knowing about soccer/basketball/computers therefore when im asked a question regarding such stuffs and i have absolutely nothing to say except "oh i use MSN!". Whoever asked me might feel that im stupid, but in actual fact my interest is not there. geddit?

one of my interest is talking superficial stuffs.

which leads to an issue that everyone is involved, Academic performance.

Definitions didnt mention anything about "degree, 8 points for Olevel, all As for poly etc" but our level of cleverness are always linked to academic. because thats the most convenient way of judging whether we are stupid or not. stereotyping. But its okay, because stereotyping in society is inevitable.

digressing abit, im not talking about those mentally retarded individuals, im talking about normal healthy people.

back to my point, school works is always used to judge a person's level of cleverness, stupid or not. thus many school dropouts/ITE students/Students who do badly for school are being viewed with colored lenses.

so, can i say that they do badly in school because their interest is not there? Some might be gifted in art, design, cooking, body building, etc.

According to selwyn, there are people in the society with multiple degrees do not know how to work with people (such as Fann Wong, in JUST FOLLOW LAW) whilst there are people who do not have degrees, PHD, diploma but their human relation skill are superb. (eg, ah bengs etc)

so which one is considered stupid?

to emphasize my point,

We also have IQ testing, mensa organisation. which is an elitist that only allows people with IQ above 150 to join, FYI, to join, you need to take an exam (SDG $50) from them and they will determine your IQ. the logic "not interested to join thus dun put in effort to prepare for the exam" doesnt apply here because you have to pay first. if you dun wanna join, then take for what?

But how about EQ then? you are super good at logic, but sucks at human relationship skills, are u considered stupid? or if you are super good at human relationship skills but logic skills are damn poor, are u also considered stupid?

food for thought!

p/s, i know we use the word stupid casually eg, nb, that girl damn stupid sia! Im actually talking about definitions here.
